Summers at Southern seeks vibrant, college-aged young men who possess a genuine passion for mentoring and guiding campers aged 11 to 18. As a member of our team, you’ll not only integrate into our close-knit community but also embody a role model, leaving a lasting impact on the young men who attend Summers at Southern.

Counselors will reside in the dorms, overseeing a group of 8 to 10 campers and ensuring their holistic well-being. Additionally, they contribute their expertise to a specific skill area. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have completed their first year of college or its equivalent.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee camper activities
  • Guide/teach a range of outdoor activities
  • Assist in setting up for any camp activities
  • Instruct campers in daily routines and clean up tasks
  • Work one on one with campers
  • Work with other camp staff members to execute camp events.
  • Lead and support campers as they participate in on and off campus activities.
  • Monitor campers to ensure compliance with camp rules
  • Act as a mentor to campers
  • Other duties as assigned
Time Requirements
  • Training Week: June 10 – June 15, 2024
  • Week 1: June 16 – June 22, 2024 
  • Week 2: June 23 – June 29, 2024 
  • Off Week: June 30 – July 6, 2024 
  • Week 3: July 7 – July 13, 2024 
  • Week 4: July 14 – July 20, 2024 

 

We prefer you to be available for all four weeks of camp. If you have a previously scheduled commitment that would not allow you to be present for all four weeks, please let us know when you apply.

Qualifications
  • College-aged young man (18 years of age or older)
  • First year of college or college equivalent completed.
  • Ability to pass a drug test
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and lead activities for large groups of students
  • Enthusiastic and positive attitude
  • Able to maintain attention and high levels of energy or excitement throughout camp
  • Must be able to spend the majority of the time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions
  • Must know how to swim
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Leadership skills to guide and motivate campers throughout their stay
  • Interpersonal Skills to build a positive relationship with campers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising and working with kids
  • Previous summer camp experience (camper or counselor)
  • Previous experience working in outdoor education
  • Survival Skills are a plus
  • First Aid, CPR, or Lifeguard certifications are a plus
  • Skills in archery, camping, field sports, firearm safety, fishing, kayaking, land navigation, paintball, rafting, swimming or other related fields are a plus.
